Adding Hebrew Fonts

Background
The G1 phone comes with fonts that do not contain Hebrew glyphs. When you see Hebrew text in any application, or in web pages, you get empty boxes instead of Hebrew characters. A lot of the underlying Android and Webkit code supports Hebrew and RTL, so by replacing the system fonts with ones that contain Hebrew glyphs, you can use most of the functionality in Hebrew. Luckily, there is a font with Hebrew glyphs, all you need to do is replace the default fonts with a new set.
Installation
All the following instructions are for Windows, but should work with small changes on other platforms.
Install the Android SDK

Remember the directory you installed this into, which will be referred here as <android-sdk>
Install the USB Driver
or (older version) http://code.google.com/android/intro/develop-and-debug.html#developingondevicehardware
Follow instructions on step 3 in that page.
Enable USB debugging on your phone
On your phone, select settings/applications/development and enable usb debugging
Connect your phone to the USB port on your computer.
To verify that all works well, from a command propt go the the <android-sdk>/tools directory and type the command
adb devices
You should see one device listed
Download the fonts to some directory on your PC
Thanks to Gilad, who merged the basic Andriod fonts with open source Hebrew glyphs.
Download the HebDroid fonts and unzip to any directory





You fill first need to mount the file system as read/write:
adb -d shell
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
Make your phone fonts writable

su
chmod 666 *
exit
adb -d push <new-fonts-dir> /system/fonts

Don't panic: you may see garbaled English characters, until you reboot your phone.
Press and hold the red button until you get a popup menu. Select the bottom option for power off.
Start your phone again and you should have Hebrew.

FAQ
My Hebrew suddenly went back to squares
This happens when you get a new version of the Android software pushed to your phone. It overwrites the fonts with the default ones. Just do the font install again
What about Arabic ?
I do not know if there is a font with Arabic glyphs.
